Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April, 1972. The family was also dominated by her grandmother and grew up being an all-single child. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. In addition to working two part-time jobs, Scott also studied secondary teaching in Temple University. She planned on becoming an instructor of English in a secondary school. It was impossible to realize the dream after completing three years of study and becoming a teaching assistant, she quit college. She started her career performing live poems and the work of her own. Then she joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. The two ended up writing You Got Me together. In a Roots performance, she announced her artist status. After that, she was able to get collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experience performing. She was also the very first signee to Hidden Beach Recordings.
